When you ask how to lead your employees, some people will say, \u201cyou\u2019re either a leader or you\u2019re not.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

UNTRUE!<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cLeaders are not born. They\u2019re made.\u201d That\u2019s a quote from Vince Lombardi and it\u2019s very, very true.<\/span><\/p>\n

Even so, you\u2019ve possibly thought, <\/span>\u201cI need to be a better leader,\u201d<\/span><\/i> but not known what that means or looks like in real life.<\/span><\/p>\n

You may even feel like \u201cleadership\u201d is vague.<\/span><\/p>\n

That\u2019s because no one has broken it down for you in a practical way.<\/span><\/p>\n

That\u2019s what we\u2019re going to do today.<\/span><\/p>\n

In reality, leadership is a practiced skill set. Like a yoga practice.<\/span><\/p>\n

You need to CLAIM your leadership skills.<\/span><\/p>\n

Here are the 3 steps to doing that…<\/span><\/p>\n

Step 1 – Self awareness<\/b><\/h3>\n

If you\u2019re feeling frustrated, start here.<\/span><\/p>\n

When we ask our clients, <\/span>\u201cWhat\u2019s going on?\u201d…<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

…\u201cThe employees are doing XYZ,\u201d<\/span><\/i> is the answer we often hear.<\/span><\/p>\n

But, today, you\u2019re going to end the blame game.<\/span><\/p>\n

We\u2019re not going to focus on whose perception is correct – yours or the employees.<\/span><\/p>\n

We\u2019re going to give you the real truth about how to reset the agreement about what is going to happen going forward.<\/span><\/p>\n

You have to get passed the idea that the employee is <\/span>actively<\/span><\/i> doing this on purpose. That is so, SO rare.<\/span><\/p>\n

The real questions you need to ask yourself are\u2026.<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. \u201cWhat did I do to cause this?\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. \u201cWhat am I tolerating from my employees?\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    The hard truth is you play a role in these frustrations that are showing up.<\/span><\/p>\n

    It\u2019s time to take 100% responsibility for your role. And that starts with self awareness.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Step 2 – Getting clarity on what the situation needs<\/b><\/h3>\n

    Imagine you\u2019re running your company & your salesperson isn\u2019t producing enough results to even cover their wage.<\/span><\/p>\n

    You\u2019ve tried everything that you know to teach them, and manage them, but they still seem stuck to their desk, not making the calls or talking to the right clients.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    By this stage, you\u2019re hopefully aware that you\u2019ve been <\/span>tolerating<\/span><\/i> this.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    Now, there are several possibilities on how to correct it.<\/span><\/p>\n

    Finding the correct action plan starts with uncovering the bigger issue underneath the lack of performance from your salesperson.<\/span><\/p>\n

    We call these The 3 Cs:<\/span><\/p>\n

      \n
    1. Is this a <\/span>competency<\/span> issue? Meaning, they don\u2019t have the right skillset to do the job.<\/span><\/li>\n
    2. Is this a <\/span>capacity<\/span> problem? They\u2019re at their limit & stressed to the max.<\/span><\/li>\n
    3. Is this a <\/span>conditioning<\/span> problem? Meaning, how have they been conditioned to respond in this environment? They may have a mental block that tells them \u201c<\/span>I can\u2019t do this.<\/span><\/i>\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      If it\u2019s NONE of The 3 Cs, then you know it\u2019s a definite leadership problem.<\/span><\/p>\n

      Asking yourself these 3 Cs will help you see what\u2019s really going on, so you\u2019re not trying to solve a capacity problem by micromanaging your salesperson, for example.<\/span><\/p>\n

      You need to tailor your action plan based on one of The 3 Cs. (We\u2019ll talk about these 3 Cs tomorrow.)<\/span><\/p>\n

      Step 3 – Taking action & raising your leadership to match the problem<\/b><\/h3>\n

      This step starts with you addressing the issue as a <\/span>leader<\/span><\/i>, not as a manager.<\/span><\/p>\n

      Managers want to manage the problem. They PUSH it onto the employee & make it the employee\u2019s problem (which usually leads to a very disgruntled employee).<\/span><\/p>\n

      A manager thinks, <\/span>\u201cWhat do I need to do to the employee to get them to do what I want?\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

      Leaders take responsibility and make it happen. Leaders rise up and say, <\/span>\u201cWhat do I need to do to bring out the best in this employee?\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

      You need to change how you show up as a leader.<\/span><\/p>\n

      Stop telling them what to do. Start showing them.<\/span><\/p>\n

      For example, instead of just telling the salesperson that they should be making more calls or sending more proposals, you need to be giving them examples of how to get it done.<\/span><\/p>\n

      Be a role model for what it means to be a good salesperson. Demonstrate the steps to the sales process, so that they can see another way of doing it.<\/span><\/p>\n

      Then, you need to hold the employee accountable to what they commit to, so that it doesn\u2019t just get forgotten or ignored.<\/span><\/p>\n

      If you\u2019re finding accountability tough, that\u2019s normal. Most of our clients find it tough to change their employees\u2019 behaviours & hold them accountable.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

      Do you need to think about it differently?<\/span><\/p>\n

      Accountability is NOT a stick to beat them with. It\u2019s more like a compass guiding their actions.<\/b><\/p>\n

      Using accountability as a compass helps change behaviour over the long term, instead of just delivering short-term changes.<\/span><\/p>\n

      It helps you empower people so that they follow through on their own responsibilities.<\/span><\/p>\n

      You are raising them up with a \u201clet\u2019s do this together\u201d mindset.<\/span><\/p>\n

      That changes the conversation from <\/span>\u201cWhat are you going to do to double your sales volume?\u201d<\/span><\/i> \u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

      …to, <\/span>\u201cHow can I help you increase your sales volume?\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

      …or, \u201cHow can I support you in reaching your goals?\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

      The latter empowers them to take responsibility for their role in the problem, the same way that you as the leader need to take responsibility for your role.<\/span><\/p>\n

      Success is never achieved alone.<\/span><\/p>\n
